UH College of Education Experts Present at National Higher Education Conference
Posted Nov. 11, 2022 — Faculty, students and postdoctoral fellows from the University of Houston College of Education will share their research on supporting students of color, student debt and more at the 2022 Association for the Study of Higher Education conference Nov. 16 through 19 in Las Vegas.
This year’s theme, “Humanizing Higher Education,” reflects on moving forward following the challenges of the global pandemic, racial tensions and political controversies.
“As a scholarly community, we have an opportunity to learn from the atrocities that have occurred (and are still occurring) and imagine and innovate together for the greater good,” ASHE president Joy Gaston Gayles said in written remarks. “In fact, many are depending on higher education to lead the way.”
Emma Perez, a postdoctoral fellow in the College’s Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies, is looking forward to presenting research about Latinas and STEM. “Latinas experience STEM contexts in a unique way, partly through the culture they bring to the higher education experience,” she said. “Our findings suggest that cultural assets can inform policy on how Latina undergraduates succeed in attaining STEM degrees.”
