Master of Education (M. Ed.) in Curriculum and Instruction - Mathematics Education

The Master’s program in Curriculum and Instruction - Mathematics Education produces educators in mathematics who are well versed in current research and theories about mathematics learning and teaching. Graduates teach mathematics at all levels, from early childhood through college, and serve as leaders across the field. The program focuses on analysis of theories about curriculum development and implementation, learning and assessment, equity in mathematics education and becoming an agent of change in mathematics education.

Completion time is typically under 2 years and as quickly as 14 months (9 hours per semester).

All Mathematics Education courses are offered ONLINE and have REQUIRED synchronous meetings typically offered 5:30 – 8:30 pm, Central time, every other week. See schedule for more details.

International Students: Please note that this specialization does not meet the requirements for students seeking an F-1 or J-1 visa; however, international students are welcome to pursue it as an online degree from their home country.

Since degree plans change periodically, students will follow the approved degree plan that is in place at the time in which they entered the program. The following are descriptions of the most current sample degree plans:

M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with and Emphasis in Mathematics Education
30-hour path with Capstone

This path serves several populations such as practicing K-12 mathematics teachers who wish to pursue graduate degrees that highlight important and current issues in mathematics education, elementary teachers who wish to become middle school teachers or mathematics specialists, and teachers interested in technological enhancements to mathematics instruction. Coursework includes:

  • CUIN Professional Seminars I and II and Capstone Seminar
  • Issues in Mathematics Education
  • Developing Proportional Reasoning
  • Teaching Geometry & Measurement Gr 6-12
  • Developing Algebraic Thinking
  • Teaching Probability and Statistics Gr 6-12
  • Teaching Mathematics and Science with Technology

M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with an Emphasis in Mathematics Education - Math/Mathematics Education Dual Credit M.Ed Program– 36-hour path with Capstone

High school mathematics teachers or students who have a B.S. or B.A in a mathematics may be interested in the Math/Math Ed Dual Credit M.Ed.

The Dual Credit Math/Math Ed M.Ed is designed for high school mathematics teachers who wish to teach Dual Credit Mathematics courses or for those who wish to become eligible to teach mathematics at a community college or some universities. For college-level academic dual credit courses, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) requires that instructors have a master’s degree or doctoral degree with 18 graduate hours in the discipline being taught. Coursework includes:

  • 18-hr MATH courses – these are courses in the Master of Arts in Mathematics program listed at ( https://www.math.uh.edu/~jmorgan/Graduate/mam.html); the student is responsible for making sure prerequisites are met. Note: History in Mathematics should NOT be included in the 18 hours of MATH courses. 
  • 18 hours of Curriculum and Instruction/Mathematics Education courses 
    • CUIN Professional Seminars I and II  
    • Issues in Mathematics Education 
    • Developing Proportional Reasoning 
    • Teaching Geometry & Measurement Gr 6-12 
    • Developing Algebraic Thinking 
    • Teaching Probability and Statistics Gr 6-12 
    • Teaching Mathematics and Science with Technology  

Applicants for this program are responsible for meeting prerequisite coursework that is needed for the mathematics courses in the Master of Arts in Mathematics program. Typically, applicants should have at least two semesters of calculus. Ideally, they also have one semester each of linear algebra, intermediate analysis and differential equations. 

The Dual Credit Curriculum and Delivery

  • ONLINE 36-hr, M.Ed program that can be completed in 2 years. Graduates earn an M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Mathematics Education.
  • 18-hr MATH courses – these are courses in the Master of Arts in Mathematics program listed at ( http://www.mathematics.uh.edu/graduate/master-programs/master-of-arts/index.php); the is student responsible for making sure prerequisites are met.
  • 18 hours of Curriculum and Instruction/Mathematics Education courses
