    University of Houston Study on Hemp May Lead to More Sustainable Farming Methods

    Hemp has become increasingly popular for its versatile uses: CBD-rich varieties are in high demand for pharmaceutical products, while fiber-rich varieties are valued for industrial applications like textiles. Now, a new University of Houston study of hemp microbes, published in the journal Nature, may help scientists create special mixtures of helpful microbes to make hemp plants produce more CBD or have better-quality fibers.

    Gessner College Nursing Graduates – the Future of Health Care

    Forty-eight future nurse leaders and their families gathered for fall commencement and pinning ceremonies for the University of Houston Andy and Barbara Gessner College of Nursing. The students represented the college’s Second Degree, RN to BSN and Traditional Bachelor of Science in nursing programs. “You all have worked very hard to get here and now are prepared to enter the field as nurse leaders and professionals,” said Kathryn Tart, professor and founding dean of the college. “You did it.”

    For Two Sugar Land Sisters, Graduation is a Family Affair

    Kristen and Emily Kiang were very close growing up in Sugar Land. The sisters often dressed the same, played together and pursued similar interests. Their mutual love for health care led them both to Baylor University to pursue undergraduate degrees in Medical Humanities. Kristen graduated in 2021; Emily in 2022. “I found out about the Second-Degree BSN program at University of Houston, and I knew that it would be the best fit for my path to becoming a nurse,” Emily said.

    Two Universities in India Launch Doctor of Nursing Degree Programs

    With support from the University of Houston’s Andy & Barbara Gessner College of Nursing, two universities in India — MGM Institute of Health Sciences in Mumbai and Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences — have introduced the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, expanding advanced nursing education in the country. It is the first time any university in India has offered the degree. The Gessner College graduated its first class of DNP professionals in May 2024.

    Based on program reports provided by Mountain Measurement, Inc., The University of Houston Andy & Barbara Gessner College of Nursing has been ranked No. 1 in the nation — in several categories — derived from first-time pass rates of the NCLEX-RN® Examination, the standardized test that nursing graduates must pass to become a registered nurse in the U.S. and Canada.
  • ABC 13 Share Your Holidays benefiting the Houston Food Bank

    Share Your Holidays This Season

    For the sixth year, the University of Houston at Sugar Land is joining ABC 13 and the Ismaili Jamatkhana and Center for the Share Your Holidays Food Drive. This is the 44th year for the event, which will take place on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024. Collection bins are located in the Albert & Mamie George Building Rotunda, Brazos Hall near the elevators and the Technology Building near the elevators.

A week-long annual celebration of African-American culture that is based on harvest festival traditions from various parts of Africa. Traditions include celebration of seven principles of African Heritage and a communal feast, called Karamu, on the sixth day of observance.

31st Annual MLK Grande Parade
  • Time: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
  • Location: Midtown Houston: 1200 Holman Street, Houston, TX 77004
The MLK Grande Parade will be held in Midtown Houston originating on San Jacinto Street & Elgin Street. The parade's theme is "Unity Through Diversity" and will feature culturally diverse performance groups from across the nation. Watch live on the CW 39-Houston.
