Micro-credential in the Digital Humanities
Program Overview
This page contains information and guidelines for researchers interested in pursuing the Micro-credential in Digital Humanities from the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Data Science Institute (HPE DSI) and UH Libraries. The purpose of the Micro-credential in Digital Humanities program is to apply successful strategies to the planning, implementation, and development of DH research projects and funding proposals. This program encompasses three scaffolded tracks:
Badge I: Foundations of DH Project Development (June 3-14, 2024)
Badge II: Intermediate DH Project Development (prerequisite: Badge I or equivalent experience) (June 10-14, 2024)
Badge III: Advanced DH Project Development (prerequisites: Badges I & II) (2025)
This program is available to active University of Houston (UH) research faculty, librarians, and doctoral students for free. See below for details regarding participant eligibility. Eligible participants need to present their competency to the DHC staff in order to bypass Badge I and participate in Badge II. Please contact dhcf@uh.edu to discuss.

Badge I: Foundations of DH Project Development is a ten-day intensive experience to be offered in a virtual and synchronous format from June 3-14, 2024. Below is a breakdown of the curriculum for Badge I:Week 1 (June 3-7, 2024)

Badge II: Intermediate DH Project Development is a five-day intensive experience to be offered in a virtual and synchronous format from June 10-14, 2024. Below is a breakdown of the curriculum for Badge II:
One Week (June 10-14, 2024)
- The project proposal template
- Plan management review
- Project management review
- Asset and labor strategies
- Grant strategies
All badge participants will engage in monthly follow-up meetings with DHC staff from July-October focused on advancing their project ideas, processes, and funding proposals.
Participants will be expected to submit a proposal for:
- (Badge I) an Internal Award through the UH Division of Research or an equivalent planning grant proposal (Mellon, NEH, ACLS, among others).
- (Badge II) an Internal Award through the UH Division of Research or an equivalent proof of concept, or prototype grant proposal (Mellon, NEH, ACLS, among others)
Participants who complete the Micro-credential in Digital Humanities badges gain access to the full range of services and infrastructure offered by the Digital Humanities Core (e.g. DHCF Portal Site Hosting, DMP Tool) and become part of a year-long cohort supported by HPE DSI and UH Libraries, aimed at nurturing new research and scholarship.
Eligibility
All tenured, tenure-track, or promotion eligible non-tenure track faculty members who carry a full-time faculty appointment and who have attained the terminal degree in their field are eligible. PhD students are also eligible, provided a letter of commitment from their faculty advisor and a project scenario that integrates and implements a refined research question into various stages of production. The expectation is that all program participants produce a proposal for a UH Internal Award or an equivalent planning, proof of concept or prototype grant, to develop and execute their research project. Participant eligibility for the Micro-credential in the Digital Humanities Program, therefore, aligns with the eligibility criteria for the Small Grant Award and New Faculty Award and external award programs (NEH Digital Advancement Grant, for example).
Program enrollment is limited. Priority selection will be given to individuals determined to apply for any of above-listed grants.
Application
- Fill out an application form (open March 1 - April 19, 2024)
- DHC staff will confirm receipt of application
- All applicants will be notified of the result of their application by May 17, 2024
- Successful applicants receive notification of the following:
- Access to course in Moodle
- Instructions for Day One
- Addition to TEAMS group for the research cohort
- Registration in PIVOT
