In pursuing higher education, many students face challenges that extend far beyond the classroom. For those who have experienced foster care, the path to college can be especially daunting. But at the University of Houston, the Diamond Family Scholars Program, managed by the Division of Student Affairs Center for Student Empowerment, is significantly impacting these students' lives. Thanks to a generous pledge of $17 million from philanthropists Andy and Andrea Diamond, this program offers financial, academic, mentoring, and emotional support for students who have aged out of the foster care system. In this article, we will explore the profound difference the Diamond Family Scholars Program is making and hear from some of the scholars whose lives have been transformed by this initiative.
Providing Stability and Support
Transitioning out of foster care is an immense challenge. It often leaves young adults facing the world with limited resources and support systems. The Diamond Family Scholars Program is dedicated to changing this narrative, offering a lifeline to those who need it most.
One of the program's beneficiaries, Faith Edmonds who is a Senior pursuing her Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, shared her experience: " The Diamond Family Scholarship helped me find stability after transitioning out of foster care. Through the scholarship, I found a support system and was surrounded by people who would help me through any obstacle. The other scholars taught me basic and important life skills that many people’s families teach them. I go to the other scholars for advice about where to fill out taxes or how to fix my car battery and everyone makes sure I get the help I need. When I got a car, I asked our scholarship director, Mr. Grady, if he could help me learn to drive on the highway. Within a week he taught me how to drive to my new internship building and I felt more confident behind the wheel. Through their support and guidance, I have also gotten to find myself and discover things I like to do. Going into my senior year, I can see the change within me, and I found myself becoming a mentor to younger students who have gone through a similar situation. I feel like this scholarship has given me a place to grow as an individual and I feel so honored to give back.”
Faith's journey exemplifies the profound impact that a scholarship program like this can have, not only on one's academic progress but also on personal growth and resilience.
A Support System for Success
The Diamond Family Scholars Program goes beyond financial aid; it fosters a supportive community for students who may not have the traditional family network to rely on. This support extends to mentorship, which plays a pivotal role in the scholars' success.
Sean Ferrell, a recent graduate who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Administration and benefitted from the program, shared his gratitude: "The Center for Student Empowerment (CSE) was able to help with every aspect of my life. CSE provides a financial and emotional support system. I will be forever grateful to the Diamonds and all the wonderful opportunities that they have provided for me.
I hope that future students who have experienced my past will have the opportunity to interact with CSE and receive all the wonderful benefits CSE has to offer. Again, thank you CSE for connecting me with the Diamonds and for your work supporting my endeavors. Go Coogs!"
The support system offered by the Diamond Family Scholars Program not only helps students financially but also emotionally, creating a nurturing environment where these young adults can thrive and aspire to achieve their dreams.
A Cycle of Empowerment
One of the most remarkable aspects of the program is how it empowers its scholars to become mentors and role models for others who have faced similar challenges. As Faith Edmonds noted, she found herself becoming a mentor to younger students who had gone through similar situations. This represents a beautiful cycle of empowerment, where those who have been supported and uplifted are inspired to give back and help others rise above their circumstances.
In Conclusion
The University of Houston's Diamond Family Scholars Program, made possible by the extraordinary generosity of Andy and Andrea Diamond, is a shining example of the power of philanthropy in higher education. By offering financial assistance, academic support, mentorship, and a nurturing community, this program is providing a lifeline to students who have aged out of the foster care system, enabling them to reach their full potential.
Through the inspiring stories of scholars like Faith Edmonds and Sean Ferrell, it is evident that the Diamond Family Scholars Program is not just a scholarship but a platform for transformation. It is an investment in the futures of young adults who are finding their path to success and, in turn, becoming beacons of hope for others. With continued support and dedication, this program will undoubtedly continue to change lives and empower the dreams of those who need it most.
