    Dr. Chakrabarti represented the Department of History at the University of Houston's fourth 50-in-5 celebration, held at the Wortham House on February 29, 2024, in recognition of faculty achievements, including major publications.

    Winner of Two Prestigeous Fellowships

    Congratulations to Associate Professor Leandra Zarnow who was recently awarded an NEH Award for Faculty in the Hispanic Serving Institutions category and a Mellon Fellowship from the American Philosophical Society’s Library & Museum to support research for her next book!

    New Book by Nandini Bhattacharya

    Dr. Bhattacharya's new book Disparate Remedies traces the history of medicine in colonial India from 1870 to 1960, focusing on the rise of medical consumerism and the conflict between Western and Indigenous medical systems.

  • NPS Mellon Fellow

    PhD Candidate Caitlyn Jones received a NPS Mellon Fellowship at the Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument. This is a two-year fellowship that will include substantial support for her own research as well as contributing to the mission of the Belmont-Paul.

    Dr. Debbie Harwell's book, "Wednesdays in Mississippi: Proper Ladies Working for Radical Change, Freedom Summer 1964," adapted into a play by Nicole Burton, was recently featured at a Washington, DC community theater from Nov. 10-19, 2023. Dr. Harwell attended the play on Nov. 18, participating in a Q&A with Susie Stedman and moderator Jean Koppen.

The UH Department of History is home to over 30 faculty dedicated to researching and teaching all areas of history. We offer a robust undergraduate program in addition to the MA in History, MA in Public History, and PhD in History.

Why major in History?

What kinds of skills does a History major provide you? A knowledge-based view of the US and world, including a systemic understanding of human institutions; strong analytical and critical thinking skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; experience using technology in research and presentation of findings; ability to work both independently and as part of a group; and the ability to both manage details and to see the big picture. Let our faculty tell you more about the value of studying history.
