Fadi Kafeety Wins Prestigious Fellowship
PhD candidate Fadi Kafeety has been awarded a doctoral fellowship at the American Center of Research from the Council of American Overseas Research Centers. Fadi will spend the 2024-25 academic year in Amman researching on the history of the left in Jordan and completing his dissertation.
Catarino and Evangelina Hernández Research Fellowship in Latino History
Karla A. Lira is Mexican born and Valley raised Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Houston. Lira’s research focuses on multi-racial dynamics of Latinx and Black college athletes in the educational and athletic spaces from the latter part of Jim Crow to the 1970s. Her current project, “For The City,” sheds light on the social relations Latinx and Blacks had in the city of Houston and the University of Houston Athletic Program through oral interviews.
Coordinating Council for Women in History’s Catherine Prelinger Award
PhD candidate Heather Butina-Sutton received the Coordinating Council for Women in History’s Catherine Prelinger Award to assist in writing her dissertation entitled "Hucksters, Hawkers, and Ganhadeiras: How Black Women Shaped Culture and Economics in the Atlantic World." It is awarded to scholars whose careers have not followed the traditional path of uninterrupted academic study. Valued at $20,000, the goal of the CCWH is to uplift women in the history profession, allowing them to continue making important contributions to women’s history through their research and other professional activities.
2023-24 Fellow in the Inter-University Program for Latino Research/UIC Mellon Program
Allison Saenz (PhD) became a fellow in the Inter-University Program for Latino Research/UIC Mellon Program at the University of Illinois in Chicago. In addition to funding support, the fellowship includes a year-round dissertation writing sup-port, professional development, mentorship, and job market support. Fellows par-ticipate in a summer or fall institute in Chicago, various online webinars and meet-ings throughout the year, structured writing and professionalization programs, monthly cohort check-ins, and a mentorship program.
Alexey Chernyavskiy at Hoover Institution Summer Policy Boot Camp
UH PhD student Alexey Chernyavskiy attended the Hoover Institution Summer Policy Boot Camp at Stanford University in August 2023, an intensive, four-day residential immersion program in the essentials of today's national and international United States policy. The program's goal to teach students how to think critically about public policy formulation and its results.
Crossing Latinidades Mellon Humanities Fellowship
