Award-Winning Students
- Chinese studies majors and minors have won prestigious awards such as first place in the International Tournament of Chinese Language and Culture competitions 世界大学生汉语桥比赛: Brian Pawlik, Beijing, 2005. My Viet Le, Beijing, 2015.
- Many Chinese majors and minors have won highly competitive scholarships to study or teach internationally. They are the recipients of the Critical Languages Scholarship, Gilman Scholarship, Boren Scholarship, Fulbright Scholarship, Full Scholarship from the Ministry of PR China and Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) from Taiwan.
- Numerous Chinese studies majors and minors have won top prizes in competitions such as Chinese language speech, singing and martial arts at the local, national and international levels.

Louis Wu Endowed Scholarship in Chinese Studies
Many thanks to the generous donation from the Wu family, Chinese Studies is pleased to announce that the Louis Wu Endowed Scholarship in Chinese Studies is available to students.
Scholarship criteria:
- Majoring in or minoring in Chinese Studies
- Full-time undergraduate
- Maintain a 3.0 GPA
- Demonstrated financial need
- Students who received this scholarship in the past two years are not eligible
Application process:
All completed applications and justifying documents must be submitted to to Professor Jing Zhang at jzhang5@uh.edu by March 20, 2024.

- Copy of a recent transcript
Selection process:
The Chinese Undergraduate Scholarship Committee (Professors Xiaohong Wen, Marshall McArthur and Jing Zhang) will select candidates based on the criteria listed above and the personal statement.
Sino-USA Friendship Award
Sponsored by the Chinese studies program
The award is given annually to students who excel in Chinese language and culture courses at UH. Students who are currently taking Chinese language courses offered by the Chinese studies program are eligible to apply. The awardees receive certificates from the department in addition to Chinese culture and language related gifts. Students should write a brief application statement and submit it to the instructor of the course. Application deadline: March 20, 2024.
The Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship 2024
Each year, the Ministry of Education (MOE) of Taiwan provides outstanding American students with scholarships to study Chinese in Taiwan. It is a great opportunity for students who are interested in studying abroad for short-term language training. Individuals with American citizenship, above the age of eighteen, with a high school diploma or higher degree, are welcome to apply for the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship.
