Subsea Systems Institute
Stewarding Ecosystems. Sustaining Industry.
The Subsea Systems Institute (SSI) is a collaborative research center between the University of Houston, Rice University and the Johnson Space Center (NASA) dedicated to the study and development of technology for safe and sustainable offsore energy exploration and production.
Objectives
Positively impact offshore safety and bring the best available technology and risk mitigation practices to the Gulf of Mexico.
Provide unbiased third-party validation and establishment of best practices to build public trust in the sustainable and safe offshore drilling and production operations in the Gulf of Mexico region and beyond.
Attract and retain talent for jobs and investments in the local, state and national economy and to reinforce Houston and the state of Texas's reputation as the Energy Capital of the World.
Responding to Tragedy
The Deepwater Horizon explosion in 2010 left 11 of its crew members dead and spilled more than 3 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The catastrophic event spurred the launch of the Subsea Systems Institute and continues to guide its mission to improve the safety and sustainability of offshore oil and gas exploration and development.
