What is the most rewarding part of your UH job? Have you learned anything from your job that you'll take with you after graduation?
The most rewarding aspect of being a part of the Metropolitan Volunteer Program is being able to make a difference in my community. I have an amazing board with passionate individuals who constantly work to provide different ways for UH students to be involved on campus, Third Ward, or Houston. As someone who wants to go into service work after graduation, I am grateful for the opportunity of being able to experience the many ways Houston helps one another.

How do you think your UH job has or is helping you prepare for full-time employment? What skills are you developing?
Working as the Director for MVP, I have definitely learned to manage my time and delegating task when I need help. Not every MVP event is the same, providing different experiences and skills that I will ultimately keep with me for years to come.

What is a typical day for you at your UH job?
While most of my time is used as the main representative for MVP, I enjoy helping my board whenever they need a hand with an event or a driver to carpool to a volunteer location. I also provide a lot of influence for our general events, since they are usually the bigger events we host on campus.

How do you balance school and work responsibilities?
I think what ultimately helps me is making sure I know my priorities for a given day and allocating enough time so neither my work nor school responsibilities fall behind. I know I can't do everything but having people around me who are willing to help me be successful is something I am grateful for.

Why did you choose the University of Houston?
After taking a tour of campus during high school, University of Houston became my first choice! It was such a vibrant environment and being a first-generation student, it was like nothing I have ever seen before. I remember feeling welcomed and telling myself that this is where I wanted to go. Since then, it has been the best decision I ever made in my life.

What are your career plans post graduation?
My time with the Metropolitan Volunteer Program has very much influenced my post-graduation plans. I realized what I enjoy the most is helping others and I think what I ultimately want to do after I graduate is join the AmeriCorps program and bring my experience in the Houston Community to make a difference around the Country.
