"I am truly honored to receive this year's Greer Dawson Wilson Scholarship. As a Black woman navigating the complexities of higher education, this scholarship affirms my dedication to empowering marginalized communities and leading a life committed to service. Receiving this award is truly special to me, and I cannot wait to take on this opportunity to promote positive change within the University," said Makiya.
Makiya currently serves as the program manager for the Center for Student Involvement (CSI) at the University of Houston, where she advises and facilitates various leadership and civic engagement programs and assists other students in their passion for volunteerism and advocacy on campus and in everyday life. Owens plans to use her scholarship to attend the Leadership Educators Institute, which will let her explore student affairs and engage in critical dialogue to promote positive change at the University of Houston.
"While Makiya has been with the Center for Student Involvement for less than a year, she has already made a positive impact on so many students. She has revamped multiple programs and built strong relationships with both staff and students. I can't wait to see her continued impact on campus and the amazing things she will do!" exclaimed Katy Kaesebier, director of the Center for Student Involvement.
