On February 2, 2024, the Division of Student Affairs, International Student and Scholars Services Office (ISSSO) joined the Houston Rockets for a night of celebration and collaboration. The event, dubbed Houston Rockets UH Night, unfolded during the Rockets' game against the Toronto Raptors, creating an unforgettable experience for all involved. Dr. Jin Zhang, director of ISSSO said, “Our office has been coordinating and bringing international students and scholars to watch Rockets games for a number of years. For many of them, it's their first time experiencing the thrill of a live game, and they've not only savored the excitement of the sport but also gained valuable insights into American traditions and values. These events also provide a wonderful opportunity for networking and socializing, enriching cultural exchange, and fostering a deeper sense of belonging within the UH international community.”
The evening commenced with a pre-game gathering from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Moody Dining Hall, setting the stage for camaraderie and excitement. International students, scholars, and members of the UH community were treated to a sumptuous meal featuring an array of culinary delights such as falafel, beef shawarma, poutine, and other savory offerings. Moody Dining Hall pulled out all the stops, crafting a special menu that showcased the cultural diversity of Toronto, the visiting team's home city, thereby enhancing the cultural exchange aspect of the event. “Attending the Rockets game event hosted by ISSSO was an unforgettable experience! Before the game, we enjoyed delicious food and had a great time socializing with fellow international students. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with others and immerse ourselves in the vibrant culture of Houston. The energy and excitement of the event set the perfect tone for an incredible game ahead,” said Areej Abrar, an international student.
Moreover, the atmosphere was abuzz with engaging board games and opportunities to win prizes generously provided by the Rockets, Texans, and CCA (Country Club of America). This combination of food, games, and prizes created an ambiance, fostering connections and friendships among attendees. Davorius James, program coordinator II, ISSSO who coordinated this event stated, “The Rockets’ UH Night, held on February 2, 2024, marked the triumphant beginning of a university-wide tradition. With the NBA’s global recognition, international students enthusiastically chose NBA games as their preferred professional sports experience, thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to witness an NBA game firsthand. The special menu at Moody Dining Hall showcased the rich cultural diversity of both Toronto and Houston during the Toronto Raptors vs. Houston Rockets game, leaving attendees with a memorable experience.”
The collaborative efforts of various departments and organizations within the University of Houston were evident throughout the event. With support from the Student Government Association (SGA), UH Dining Services, and UH Alumni, Houston Rockets UH Night attracted a total attendance of 77 individuals, underscoring the success of the collaborative endeavor.
