Kevin Nguyen (He/They) has been named the new director of the LGBTQ Resource Center at the University of Houston. Starting on June 27, 2022, Nguyen will lead the Center towards achieving its mission to cultivate safe spaces on campus, empowering LGBTQ students to develop their authentic identities, and become proud, successful, and engaged members of the UH community.
“I’m really excited about this position being a combination of my admiration for education and promoting inclusion of all the intersectional identities that help us develop into accepting human beings with a passion for equity, advocacy, and social justice,” Nguyen said.
Nguyen has worked for the University of Houston for almost 12 years in various student-supporting roles including: Academic Advisor 3, First Year Experience Academic Advisor, and more. They have also served as a volunteer for the LGBTQ Resource Center and currently serves in the Center’s Alumni Association.
In addition to their contributions on campus, Nguyen has various experience with community partners including serving on Mayor Sylvester Turner’s LGBTQ Advisory Board, leading fundraising efforts for Bunnies on the Bayou, and promoting social justice with Pride Houston.
Nguyen has earned two degrees from the University of Houston: a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a Bachelor of Science in health, along with a Bachelor of Science in biology from Baylor University. He also earned a Master of Science in college counseling and student development.
Keith T. Kowalka, assistant vice president for student affairs, said Nguyen “comes to this role with 13 years of experience in a university environment in both student affairs and academic affairs, is an active member of the LGBTQ community in Houston, and brings a student-centered approach to working with students, student organizations, and the UH community. He is familiar with our campus, and brings a great vision and proven track record in providing support and advocacy centered around issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.”

The LGBTQ Resource Center provides support and a safe space for LGBTQ people on campus to access resources, ask questions, and make connections with other students. Through visibility and education, we seek to create an environment of LGBTQ acceptance and inclusion for the entire campus community. The Center sponsors annual events such as National Coming Out Day. Other services include a lending library, an ambassador/leadership program, mentoring program, Cougar Ally Training, and discussion groups.
