Tamsen Burke has joined the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services (DSAES) as the associate director for Programs and Assessment for the Department of Campus Recreation effective July 6, 2015.
As the associate director for Programs and Assessment, Burke will be overseeing all program staff and their respective programs including Intramural Sports and Sports Clubs, Fitness, Outdoor Adventure, and Summer Camps as well as working with partners within the DSAES and beyond to provide a variety of programs to engage students at UH. In addition, Burke will be leading all departmental efforts related to assessment planning and reporting, including benchmark studies, program evaluations, and learning outcomes. She will also direct leadership development initiatives and serve on the departmental leadership team.
She brings over 20 years of knowledge and experience in higher education, having served in numerous roles at several institutions, including at the director level. She most recently served as director of the Sallie Tiernan Field House at Scripps College. In that role she was responsible for opening, managing, and supervising the $25 million, 30,000-square-foot facility as well as developing and implementing comprehensive fitness and wellness programs.
Prior to that, Burke served in multiple roles at the University of Chicago, including director for Intramural, Recreation, and Sports Clubs. She was also the coordinator for Intramural Sports, Sports Clubs, and Summer Day Camp at the University of Toledo’s Student Recreation Center which is ranked as one of the top 10 recreation centers in the country.
She has developed comprehensive programs to promote healthy living through campus-wide collaboration and obtaining student feedback including Recreation, Intramural, Sports Club, Aquatic, Fitness/Wellness, Green Bike, Living in Balance, and Healthy Lifestyle programs, which reflected the complexities of a diverse student population while creating a sense of community, especially for underrepresented groups.
“She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will allow her to contribute to the advancement of departmental initiatives to benefit the university by supporting student success,” said Department of Campus Recreation Director Kim Clark. “We are fortunate to have someone with Tamsen’s experience join the Campus Recreation team.”
Burke received a Master of Arts in Physical Education and Recreation Administration from East Tennessee State University and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Emory and Henry College.
