Innovative Research Talk with Lorra Garey

Thursday, April 18, 2024

10:00 am - 11:00 am

Lorra Garey will discuss the results of her pilot project, A Mobile Intervention for Cannabis-related Disparities among Black Cannabis Users: A Pilot Study, which investigates the critical need for a culturally adapted mobile intervention for treating Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD) among Black adults.

Black adults disproportionately experience health disparities related to cannabis use. Additionally, Black adults have fewer attempts to quit cannabis, are prone to relapse due to cannabis use methods, and may use cannabis to mitigate negative mood states. Yet, no culturally tailored, accessible, evidenced-based treatment exists to address the unique needs of Black adults with CUD. Through her Pilot award from HEALTH-RCMI, Garey has developed, assessed, and refined a mobile intervention using rigorous methods to meet the unique, cultural, and psychological needs of Black adults with CUD.

About the Speaker

Lorra Garey, Ph.D., is a research assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Her core interests include addressing health disparities among underserved and vulnerable populations. Garey’s research examines the correlation between substance use and psychological vulnerabilities and mitigating susceptible risk factors, such as tobacco use. Other areas of research focus involve the use of transdiagnostic interventions that reduce tobacco use, alcohol use, and symptoms related to anxiety and depression and the potential for technology as a means to deliver effective treatment and increase access to mental health resources.
