Lipid Engineering to Create New Therapeutics and Other Useful Products

Tuesday, March 26, 2024

11:30 am - 1:00 pm

This presentation will demonstrate an enzyme-based process to enhance the nutritional and therapeutic properties of lipids (plant and animal fats and oils). Studies show improved bioavailability in oils for cystic fibrosis patients and species-specific antimicrobial activity for rebalancing microbiomes. Studies targeting strep throat, RSV, and dental caries will also be discussed. Other lipids can be engineered to interact with the skin, to increase its permeability to a range of hydrophobic molecules, from hydrocortisone to CBD. Finally, vegetable oils can be modified to act as latex-compatible lubricants to replace silicone oils.

About the Speaker

Daniel J. Monticello, Ph.D. is Chief Scientific Officer at GlycosBio Inc. in the Texas Medical Center. He obtained his B.S. in Microbiology from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Georgia before joining Miles Laboratories in Indiana. He soon moved to Texas and has co founded several biotechnology companies. He has over 35 years of experience in large and small biotechnology companies and has developed and commercialized many technologies including new food preservatives, protein-based cancer medicines, synthetic biology systems for industrial chemicals, processes for the biodesulfurization of crude oil, and lipid-based therapeutics. He is inventor or co-inventor on over 40 issued or pending US patents.
